Our Method

A clearer way to understand writing.

Writing is more than the words that end up on the page. It involves thinking, language, physical skills and emotional readiness, all working together across the writing process.

Attuned2Write™ helps us understand how those pieces come together, where writing is becoming difficult and what to focus on next.

At the centre of our method are five simple questions.

Why is writing hard?

When a child struggles with writing, it can be difficult to know why. They may have strong ideas but struggle to organise them, know what they want to say but find it difficult to get it onto the page, or have the skills but find writing overwhelming.

We look beyond the finished piece to understand what may be contributing to the difficulty.

Where is writing breaking down?

We look at writing across seven stages: Prepare → Research → Organise → Compose → Edit → Share → Submit

These stages help us see where a child is working well and where the process is becoming more difficult. Underneath them are four foundations: thinking, language, physical and emotional. Together, they give us a clearer picture of the whole writer.

What should we focus on first?

Not every difficulty needs to be addressed at once.

By bringing the writing process and developmental foundations together, we can identify the areas having the greatest impact and decide what deserves attention first. This turns assessment into a practical starting point for support.

How do we work together?

Writing happens across a child's life. At school. At home. And, for many children, in the clinic.

Attuned2Write™ gives parents, teachers and clinicians a shared language for understanding what they are seeing, communicating about writing and working towards the same priorities. One child. Three perspectives. A shared understanding.

Is it working?

Understanding shouldn't stop at the first assessment.

We can return to the same writing process over time to see what has changed, where progress is happening and where support may need to shift This keeps the focus on the child's development rather than a single piece of writing or score.

The Attuned2Write™ approach

The AWIDA™ (Attuned2Write Integrated Writing and Developmental Assessment) helps us understand where writing is becoming difficult and why. Attuned2Write™ then provides the how, giving everyone a clearer direction for what to focus on next.

We look beyond the written sample.

Writing doesn't always show us everything a child knows or is capable of communicating. Where appropriate, we look at both oral and written narratives to understand the gap between what a child can communicate when they speak and what they are able to express in writing.

This helps us distinguish between difficulty developing and communicating ideas and difficulty turning those ideas into written language.
